YES, it is a big factor.
That said, I worked a high-stress RN position during my 3rd pregnancy and was totally stressed, even went to the ER one morning after my shift was over b/c I was having chest pains and I nearly fainted — anxiety attack. All that and my baby was born exactly on her due date.

You are indeed in a difficult situation. I am a director fora training program that prepares MICA and CAMI patients to re-enter back into the work force. MICA (Mental Illness Chemical Addiction) Patients are extremely stressful to deal with the cursing, the threatning, sometimes even physical violence is one of the most stressful things you can go through and I am very familiar with going home sitting in the dark and crying.
What I suggest in your case is first to seek counseling . I am sure on your job they have provisions for you to receive counseling as they understand that this is a stressful environment. All jobs in thes fields have this option. In going for counseling they will give you ways in wicth to relieve stress, some techniques that can be used right on the job.
Secondly, Once the counselor evaluates your situation, they will be able to make the suggestion to your employer if they feel you need a leave of absence or you need to go on disability. Some employers will give you leave with pay, if you are lucky,{mine does} but if they don’t the counselor can reccomend disability, this way you do have some income coming in.
Lastly, If it just becomes absolutely unmanageable after trying these suggestions then you should definitely consider strongly the option of leaving nothing is worth your health. Had I listened to my own advice, I would not have been hospitalized for two and a half months and on leave for a year. I now have bleeding ulcers and a heart condition. I am a living witness nothing , no job,no finance is worth your health. The job will be there and they will hire someone else to do it. All the money in the world is no good to you if you are incapable of enjoying it because you are to sick to do anything but go to Doctor’s offices. Believe me the bills will also be there regardless so not an important thing to worry about because if you are sick you can’t pay them anyway. At least by taking care of yourself. You have a excellent chance of coming out of this situation in a few months and will be able to cope . When any of my staff comes to me with similar situations i give them the same advice. It has proven to be helpful.
I hope this will be helpful to you. Take care of yourself and may God Bless you and your unborn child as well as your other children.

I can personally vouch that stress is a big factor in preterm labor. My husband was deployed to Iraq when I was about 4 months pregnant, that was in February of 2005. I was due July 5th and at 29 weeks, I was admitted for preterm labor. That specific time, I had a horrid UTI and I was very very sick. I was put on bedrest for 4 weeks. Well, a little after the 4 week marker, which put me at just over 33 weeks, I got a phone call from my husband and he was in a bombing incident…I was sooooo stressed out! He was banged up pretty bad, but luckily there wasn’t any life threatening injuries. He did receive the Purple Heart though. For the next 3 days, I worried and stressed and all I wanted was for him to be home that way I knew he was safe and where he was at all times. The next morning I woke up with some severe pains and went to the hospital…I was in active labor. I delivered my son who was 6 weeks premature on May 25, 2005, and to my surprise, he was a healthy 6 lb. 11.5 ozs!! The only thing wrong with him was he needed help breathing right after he was born…for about 5 minutes until he realized he could do it on his own. He went home 3 days later! So yes, I do believe that stress is a BIG factor in pre-term labor. Whether it has been really studied or not. My advice to you is this…if this is your only means of income for you and your family, try to stick it out as long as you possibly can. I am sure the stress is tremendous on you and your baby…as well as those at home. Talk to your boss and see if there is something a little less stressful you can do. Being nearly 30 weeks pregnant, even 3 weeks pregnant, I’d be scared out of my mind to do the kind of work you are doing!!! You are a very strong woman! See if there are alternatives at your place of work. Better yet, talk this over with your OB, see what he may suggest. He may give a written order to your employer saying, this is how it’s gonna be…if you don’t like it, too bad! There is nothing you can do about it! They can’t fire you if you have a written order from any health care provider, and especially if you’re pregnant…that is a law suit waiting to happen! I hope everything works out for you and your family. Hang in there!!!!
